The family you are born into determines to a very large extent what your chances are later in life.
If your parents have a lower level of education and the home environment is not optimally stimulating, there is a high probability that, with the same CITO score, you will receive a lower recommendation than a student with highly educated parents and a carefree home environment.
The opportunity gap is not only related to financial capital, but also to social and cultural background. You know the codes of conduct in certain circles, know how to dress for any occasion, and can join in conversations about numerous topics. That provides a basic sense of confidence: 'I will always manage, anywhere and anytime, because I have enough baggage and a safety net'.
